The Midlands roughly refers to an area in the middle of South Carolina. It is centered in Columbia, the state's capital and largest city. The Midlands is so named because it is halfway point between the Upstate and the Lowcountry. Many military bases such as Fort Jackson and Shaw Airforce Base are located here along with the capital of Columbia. The Pee Dee region lies between the coastal region and the Midlands and showcase cities such as Florence and Darlington. The upper region of the Midlands around the Charlotte area one can find cities like Rock Hill and Fort Mill which are bedroom towns of Charlotte. Many large companies such as Monster and Honda have located around the I 95 and I 20 intersection. West Columbia and Irmo are bedroom towns for Columbia. Many popular spots such as Sandhills State park and Lake Murray are within these regions along the Darlington National Speedway.

Columbia
Columbia is the capital and second largest city in South Carolina, with a population estimate of 134,309 as of 2016. The city serves as the county seat of Richland County, and a portion of the city extends into neighboring Lexington County. It is the center of the Columbia metropolitan statistical area, which had a population of 767,598 as of the 2010 United States Census, growing to 817,488 by July 1, 2016, according to 2015 U.S. Census estimates. Columbia enjoys a diversified economy, with the major employers in the area being South Carolina state government, the Palmetto Health hospital system, Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, Palmetto Health and the University of South Carolina. Rock hill
Rock Hill is the largest city in York County and the fifth-largest city in the state.[4] It is also the fourth-largest city of the Charlotte metropolitan area, behind Charlotte, Concord, and Gastonia (all located in North Carolina, unlike Rock Hill). The population was 66,154 as of the 2010 Census. Rock Hill is located approximately 25 miles south of Charlotte and approximately 70 miles north of Columbia. Rock Hill is home to Winthrop University, founded in 1886 as a women's college. It is a thriving, public, co-ed four-year liberal arts college with an annual enrollment of over 7,000 students. Sumter
Sumter is located just 35 min east of Columbia and is home to Shaw Airforce Base. With a population of 30,000 Sumter offers shopping and dining at many local and national retailers. Many have recently discovered as very welcoming city with lots of hospitality. Sumter is home to several collegiate institutions. The area is served by Morris College, a private four-year liberal arts college, Central Carolina Technical College, a public two-year technical college, and the University of South Carolina Sumter. Saint Leo University, Troy University, and Webster University all offer course and degree programs at Shaw Air Force Base. Sumter is home to Shaw Air Force Base, headquarters of the United States Army Central, 9th Air Force, the 20th Fighter Wing and many other tenant units. FLORENCE
Florence is the county seat of Florence County and the primary city within the Florence metropolitan area. The area forms the core of the historical "Pee Dee" region of South Carolina, which includes the eight counties of northeastern South Carolina, along with sections of southeastern North Carolina. Milken Institute 2008 Best Performing Cities Index showed the Florence MSA as the 5th largest gainer in their evaluation of the top 124 small metropolitan areas in the United States.
